Starting with the easiest question, you’ve been given an elephant. You can’t give it away or sell it. What would you do with the elephant?
If I were given an elephant, I’d make sure it’s in the best environment possible, where it can thrive and be properly cared for. Since I couldn’t keep an elephant in my backyard, I’d look into a wildlife sanctuary or animal reserve so that I am sure the elephant is in a place designed to meet all its needs. After that, I will try to be involved in its life as much as possible!
What is the biggest assumption people tend to make about you — be it wrong or right?
People often assume that I’m always cheerful and level-headed, which is true most of the time! I tend to stay calm and positive, even in challenging situations, and I think that helps create a good atmosphere for both my team and the candidates I connect with. But like everyone, I do have my off days—I just try to keep things in perspective and find the silver lining where I can.
What do you love most about working in a recruitment agency?
Meeting new people and learning about their career goals and stories is probably the most interesting part of my work. I like the challenge of finding the perfect match for each candidate, and vice-versa, finding the right expert for our clients. It’s also very motivating to work with colleagues who are just as excited about connecting people with their dream job opportunities.
What do you like least about working in a recruitment agency?
The thing I dislike the most (although I find “dislike” to be a very strong word) is the assumption that this job is easy, a walk in the park. Especially for my duties, which mainly consist of talent sourcing, people get the impression that finding candidates is nothing special, but it does require a lot of work behind the scenes. This involves a deep understanding of each client’s needs, improving searches, and forming relationships. Finding the right match also requires a lot of trial and error, which others may not always notice. Despite this, going through this process has helped me value the small successes and practice patience 😊 There is nothing more rewarding than your hard work paying off at the end.
What do you most value in team members?
I really value openness and a supportive attitude in team members. When people are willing to share ideas, give constructive feedback, and learn from each other, it creates a space where everyone can grow. I also think a good sense of humour is essential—it’s amazing how a shared laugh can ease tension and remind us not to take ourselves too seriously, even during challenging times.
What is the most overused or overrated thing that recruiting pros believe about themselves?
The idea that recruiters have a “sixth sense” for immediately identifying the ideal applicant one of the most overused notions I’ve come across. While experience does sharpen our instincts, recruiting is far from just intuition—it’s all about research, strategy, and understanding people. Our “inner voice” is only a helping tool in finding the perfect expert for each vacancy.
What is your current state of mind as it relates to the current state of recruiting?
My state of mind is a mix of curiosity and adaptability. Recruiting is changing fast, especially with all the new technology we as professionals can use to find top talent. Although I am excited to expand my technical skills further, I also find that it’s important to keep the human side of recruiting. People want real, genuine connections and want to work for companies that share their values.
If you could have dinner with any two famous people, dead or alive, who would you choose?
If I could have dinner with any two famous people, I’d choose Frida Kahlo and Carl Jung. Frida was so bold in expressing her life and emotions through her art, and I am curious to hear her thoughts on resilience and self-expression. Carl Jung, on the other hand, with his deep understanding of the human mind and personality, could bring fascinating insights to the table. I think they’d have a rich conversation on creativity, identity, and the ways our inner world shapes how we see the world around us. It would be amazing to hear from two people who explored the depths of human experience in such unique ways.
Most important question: What’s your go-to karaoke song?
I’m usually the one to stand in the crowd and cheer others, but if I had to choose one song, it would be “Espresso” by Sabrina Carpenter. I might change the lyrics to “I’m working late, ’cause I’m a recruiter” next time I’m on stage 😉
Finish this sentence: Gerry is…
